Co-worker just pulled in driving a W221. He's in the same position I am and works for a division that has slim profit margins. Assuming it's a CPO car he dropped $50k or so on it. What the hell do I have to do to get a fucking raise around here?

Two options. Either his spouse makes good money, or he's in debt up to his eyeballs.

I'll assume debt - his GF was preggers a few months ago and he was screwing around on her at the same time. Previously he was rolling in a then-current gen Escalade and E65 7-series.

Hah! Tell him to enjoy shelling out $700 every time he hits a pothole for a new tire.

no, just a wife or GF that makes just as much of more than you. Everywhere I've worked people that made less than me or the same has sweet cars and homes. I was busy microwaving bologna so I won't starve to death. The answer always was the GF or wife.

Train your gag reflex?
But still, W221 suffered a lot on depreciation, even if in good conditions should be found in the high 20's in the US. Even here in Brazil they can be easily found at Corolla prices.

Or... it's a lease. Best way to make people think you're well off without actually spending that much.

I have a friend like this, I am mad at him. He got a sales job and promptly bought a 335i, I think an '07, with a manual. Anyways, he didn't like working anymore so he is now living off of unemployment and we are all paying for his fucking car payment and insurance. I know the car itself wasn't outrageously expensive, but he pays up the butt for insurance because of his poor driving record.
All he does these days is his DJ gigs and sit on his ass. I think maybe he goes to the gym too.

I get to see everyone's salary here when we're working on proposals. Some people have insane priorities. There are folks who literally make half what I do who drive cars that I would consider 3x beyond my budget.
Then we've got a VP who makes nearly twice what I do who drives an old 626 that's got rust bubbles all over it. Not as a daily beater with something better in the garage, it's the only car he owns. He pretty much hates spending money on anything. His wife drives an Evoque though.

Could be getting work benefits for pregnancy, or used that to argue for a raise (which he then proceeded to blow on this car).

Maybe he makes other money on the side. I can tell you that my day job certainly didnt pay for my Corvette.

Debt, that's how!
7 year auto loan is the max in my state, some states let you go longer. 50k for 7 years at a competitive interest rate with $0 down (of course) is about a $725 monthly payment.
Which is fucking astronomical in my opinion, but it makes $50k seem a lot smaller.

One or more of the following happened: 1) He saved enough money for a healthy down payment and financed the rest. 2) He can afford to make the payments because he lives below his means. >>OR<< 3) He financed it 100% and his looking at crippling payments for the next five years. 4) He's purely showing off and it come back to haunt him. From past experience I thing 3 and 4 are most likely.
As long as I live I will do everything I can to never have another car payment. In my case the monthly average cost of maintenance and repair is 1/3 to 1/2 of what a monthly payment would be. Find a great car/SUV that can is fun serve you throughout the next phases of your life (spouse, kids, pets). Trust a complete stranger over the internet on this point.
Now with that being said I encourage you so seek that raise.

$61000 is an expensive way to pay for $50000. It's amazing to me that so many never do this calculation on the total life of the loan.

Maybe he works more than one job instead of complaining about what his coworkers drive on the internet.

Oh, all the freaking time. People always vilify car salespeople for trying to sell people on payment, but what they don't realize is they're all conditioned to do it out of habit because 3/4 of customers walk in the door talking about payment only. They don't say "I want to buy a $15,000 car." They say "I need to be $300 per month." Then when they pick out a $20,000 car and the payment is $80 higher than they said they wanted, they still buy it anyway.
Most people in the world aren't too bright when it comes to numbers.
